The City of Monroe has received a $10,000 Downtown Revitalization Grant from ElectriCities of North Carolina. The grant will be used to support the renovation of the historic former American Bank and Trust building on Main Street.
The award was confirmed in October and highlights Monroe’s efforts to preserve its heritage while encouraging economic activity in its downtown area.
“This grant represents another important step in strengthening downtown Monroe,” said City Manager Mark Watson. “Restoring the former bank not only preserves a piece of our history, it also creates new opportunities for investment and activity in the heart of our city.”
The building at 120 N. Main Street is currently undergoing renovations. Once completed, it will house the Monroe Office of Economic Development and Downtown Office.
The grant does not require matching funds from the city. It is part of ElectriCities’ program that aims to help member communities reach their downtown revitalization goals. The city’s Downtown Office will work with ElectriCities to complete the necessary grant procedures.
“ElectriCities is proud to support the revitalization of this historic building in the heart of downtown Monroe,” said Carl Rees, Manager of Economic and Community Development at ElectriCities. “Helping fund a high-impact project like this will help spark growth, innovation, and a thriving downtown community for residents and visitors alike.”
ElectriCities provides power supply and related services to more than 90 community-owned electric systems across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The organization manages power supply for two agencies in North Carolina and offers technical assistance to members operating electric distribution systems.
