On Tuesday, Congressman Mark Harris of North Carolina’s 8th District recognized Army Sergeant Michael Verardo on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Verardo died on August 26 after living for 15 years with injuries suffered during his deployment in Afghanistan.

During his remarks, Congressman Harris stated, “I rise to honor the life of Army Sergeant Michael Verardo, a true American hero, who passed away last week following a fifteen-year battle with injuries from his deployment to Afghanistan.

Michael served his country with distinction as a proud infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division – surviving devastating injuries from IED explosions that claimed one of his legs and left him with countless other seen and unseen injuries, resulting in over 120 surgeries and hours of therapy.

Michael’s life was not simply defined by his courage, but also by the love he had for his wife, Sarah, and their three daughters.

His legacy will continue to empower thousands of wounded veterans with hope as they live full lives back here at home.

Michael’s life is a powerful reminder that freedom is not free – it comes at a cost.”

Verardo’s service included enduring multiple serious wounds caused by improvised explosive devices while serving in Afghanistan as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. He underwent more than 120 surgeries and extensive rehabilitation over the course of his recovery.

The congressman noted that Verardo’s example would continue to inspire other wounded veterans as they return home.
