Here in North Carolina, Anderson Clayton, chairwoman of the state’s Democratic Party, has expressed support for Zohran Mamdani following his recent victory over Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic primary. After Mamdani’s win, Clayton posted on social media: “idk about y’all, but I regained a lot of hope last night — NC municipal elections here we come!!!!!”

Mamdani’s campaign has promoted policies that some critics describe as radical and out of step with mainstream American views. These include proposals to defund police departments, increase taxes by $9 billion, abolish jails, decline cooperation with ICE, and implement higher taxes on predominantly white neighborhoods.

Despite Mamdani having a reported 67% very unfavorable rating nationwide, according to the release, Clayton and other Democrats have voiced their support for him. The statement claims that this trend is reflected in North Carolina as well, where candidates aligned with similar platforms are running in municipal races across the state.

The release concludes: “Mamdani is now the nationwide leader of the Democrat Party. Right there, cheering him on is the leader of the NC Democratic Socialists, Anderson Clayton.”
