The North Carolina Democratic Party is set to host its “Unity Dinner” on Saturday, featuring Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper as speakers. The event has drawn criticism from the North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP), which argues that the policies implemented by Governor Pritzker in Illinois represent what Democrats want to bring to North Carolina.
Illinois currently has 27 of the nation’s top 50 counties with the highest property tax rates, and five of its metropolitan areas rank among the top ten for property taxes nationally, including the four highest in the country. Additionally, Illinois imposes the second-highest gasoline tax in the United States, following California.
Governor Pritzker has publicly supported sanctuary laws in Illinois. During a congressional hearing, he stated, “I will stand in the way of Tom Homan.” In February 2017, Pritzker also tweeted: “As a protest against Trump’s rescinding protections for trans kids, everyone should use the other gender’s bathroom today! #protecttranskids.”
“JB Pritzker’s Illinois is a vision Democrats have for our state: a wasteland of higher taxes, bloated spending, and sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Democrats do not care about the health, safety, and well-being of North Carolina families and that’s why they will lose up and down the ballot in 2026,” said NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer.
