Rep. Mark Harris, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina, posted a series of statements on his Twitter account on January 12, 2026, addressing local law enforcement and national security issues.

In one tweet dated January 12, 2026, Harris called for the resignation or temporary leave of absence of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff: “@MeckSheriff must resign immediately—or at minimum take a leave of absence. He’s now under investigation for serious allegations: corruption, maladministration, and more. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office must restore the people’s confidence, not shatter it further.”

On the same day, Harris shared a link to an article in the Daily Caller without additional commentary: “Read more in the @DailyCaller: https://t.co/8ACpZ5SFtr”.

Later that evening, Harris commented on attacks against federal officers: “Vehicular attacks against @ICEgov are up 3,200% Reminder: ICE officers are REAL PEOPLE doing their jobs, enforcing the law, removing illegal aliens, and working to keep America safer for all American citizens”.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office has faced increased scrutiny following publicized allegations regarding its leadership. Corruption and maladministration investigations into local sheriff’s offices have historically led to calls for accountability and sometimes resulted in changes in leadership or policy reforms.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have reported a significant increase in targeted attacks nationwide over recent years. According to various reports from government oversight bodies and advocacy organizations, incidents involving threats or violence against ICE personnel have risen sharply as immigration enforcement remains a contentious issue across multiple states.
