Rep. Mark Harris, a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina, posted a series of tweets in late July and early August 2025 addressing topics including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), immigration, free speech legislation, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
On July 31, 2025, Harris criticized the presence and actions of certain NGOs in the United States: “Leftism has crept its way into our nation to the point where dangerous NGOs like Siembra NC are comfortable operating in the open.
They wave foreign flags and proudly encourage illegal aliens to continue with their invasion, and if ICE officers just doing their job get in the”. Siembra NC is an immigrant rights organization based in North Carolina that has advocated for Latino communities and has been involved in local activism related to immigration enforcement.
Later that day, Harris called for legislative action on speech issues, writing: “Pass the Free Speech Fairness Act!!” on July 31, 2025. The Free Speech Fairness Act is a bill previously introduced in Congress aimed at easing restrictions on political speech by tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The following day, August 1, 2025, Harris expressed support for Israel amid ongoing conflict involving Hamas: “I wholeheartedly stand with and support Israel.
Hamas is evil, and it is causing the famine in the Gaza Strip by hoarding food and selling it so it can buy more weapons. Hamas must surrender unconditionally or be destroyed.
When states like Canada, France, and England want to”. The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in significant humanitarian concerns in Gaza. Various reports have indicated that both sides have faced international scrutiny regarding civilian suffering and aid access.
Siembra NC has been active since its founding as an advocacy group for Latinx immigrants in North Carolina. The Free Speech Fairness Act has been periodically discussed among lawmakers who argue it would permit greater participation by religious leaders and nonprofits in political discourse without risking their tax-exempt status. The situation in Gaza remains complex; humanitarian agencies have reported severe shortages of food due to both internal control by militant groups such as Hamas and external blockades affecting supply routes.
