Rep. Mark Harris, a U.S. Congressman from North Carolina, posted a series of tweets on January 20 and 21, 2026, criticizing Democratic policies related to crime and immigration enforcement.

On January 20, Harris stated: “Democrats protect criminals instead of their victims.”

Later that day, he commented on the status of the SAVE Act in Congress: “The SAVE Act requires proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections. And where is it now? Sitting in the Senate, collecting dust. Bottom Line: A nation that cannot secure its elections cannot preserve its liberty.” The SAVE Act refers to proposed legislation requiring individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when voting in federal elections.

On January 21, Harris referenced a recent incident involving two individuals named Fletcher and Skylar: “Fletcher and Skylar are the latest victims of NC’s deadly sanctuary policies. They were allegedly killed by an illegal alien with a prior DUI in a head-on crash. They should still be here—but radical pro-crime Democrats protect criminal aliens instead.” In this tweet, Harris links the deaths to North Carolina’s sanctuary policies and criticizes Democratic lawmakers for what he describes as protecting “criminal aliens.”

Sanctuary policies generally refer to local or state government practices that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities. Supporters argue these measures foster trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement; critics contend they can lead to public safety risks.

The debate over election security has intensified nationally in recent years, with some lawmakers advocating for stricter voter identification requirements such as those outlined in the SAVE Act.
