Rep. Mark Harris, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina, posted a series of statements on January 22, 2026, criticizing Special Counsel Jack Smith’s actions in prosecuting former President Donald Trump.
In his first post, Harris alleged that Jack Smith was motivated by personal animus toward Trump and accused him of abusing his authority as a prosecutor. On January 22, 2026, Harris wrote: “Jack Smith’s Trump Derangement Syndrome drove him, as a prosecutor, to do whatever it took to block President Trump from a second term. That kind of weaponized justice is DANGEROUS.”
Minutes later, Harris reiterated his position regarding Smith’s intentions: “BOTTOM LINE: Jack Smith’s goal was always to take down President Donald Trump.”
In another post the same day, Harris called for further investigation into Smith’s conduct and demanded increased transparency and accountability. He stated: “We need more investigation, more whistleblowers, and more accountability for Jack Smith and his Arctic Frost insanity. His hostility toward Republicans and conservatives, and efforts to spy and rig the election, demand answers.”
Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to oversee federal investigations involving former President Donald Trump. The investigations have drawn significant attention and controversy due to their political implications.
The calls for increased oversight referenced by Rep. Harris reflect broader concerns among some Republican lawmakers about the impartiality of federal prosecutors involved in high-profile political cases.
