Rep. Mark Harris, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina, posted a series of tweets on July 17, 2025, criticizing the National Education Association (NEA) and questioning its influence on American education.
In one tweet, Harris stated: “They call themselves a ‘teachers union’, but their true mission is clear: indoctrinating our children with toxic propaganda. Time is running out for the National Education Association!” (July 17, 2025).
He followed up by sharing an external news source: “More in the @realDailyWire: https://t.co/llFQwp2ljS” (July 17, 2025).
Later that day, Harris continued his criticism by posting: “With a teachers union like the NEA, no wonder our nation’s students are doing worse than ever. I don’t know what is more horrendous—adopting an official position saying President Trump is embracing fascism, or MISSPELLING FASCISM! THE NEA MUST GO!” (July 17, 2025).
The NEA is the largest labor union in the United States and represents public school teachers and other support personnel. It has been involved in various policy debates regarding curriculum content and educational standards across the country. The organization often faces criticism from some lawmakers who argue that its positions reflect political ideologies rather than educational priorities.
According to recent reports on student achievement trends nationwide, there have been ongoing concerns about academic performance following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and debates over curriculum content.
