Rep. Mark Harris, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina, has recently taken to social media to voice concerns about discrimination against homeschooled students in university admissions and to question federal funding for the Truman Scholarship Program.
On December 3, 2025, Rep. Harris posted on X (formerly Twitter), “BREAKING: I’m fighting to stop universities from discriminating against homeschoolers! No student should be treated as a second-class applicant simply because they are homeschooled. With 3M+ homeschoolers in America, it’s time to end the bias and give every kid a fair shot!” He emphasized that more than three million students are currently homeschooled in the United States.
In a follow-up post on the same day, Rep. Harris directed his followers to additional commentary by Elizabeth Mitchell at The Daily Signal: “Read more from @TheElizMitchell in the @DailySignal: https://t.co/YYaFlvvevd”.
Later that afternoon, Rep. Harris shifted focus to federal scholarship programs with another post: “The Truman Scholarship Program spawns 35 DEMOCRATIC jobs for every 1 REPUBLICAN job. Why are YOUR tax dollars bankrolling the DNC’s private staffing agency?”
Homeschooling has grown significantly in recent years across the United States, with millions of families opting for alternative education paths due to academic, religious, or safety reasons. Admissions policies regarding homeschoolers vary among universities; some institutions have adapted their requirements while others maintain traditional criteria that can pose challenges for applicants educated outside conventional school systems.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a federally funded program supporting college juniors committed to public service careers. While its mission is nonpartisan and aims to develop future leaders in government and nonprofit sectors, criticism over perceived political imbalance among recipients has surfaced periodically.
Rep. Harris’s comments reflect ongoing debates about educational access and ideological diversity within publicly funded initiatives.
