On Thursday, Representative Mark Harris of North Carolina’s 8th District voted to advance the One Big Beautiful Bill to President Trump’s desk. The bill aims to implement key aspects of the America First agenda that many Americans supported in recent elections.
“Today, I cast my vote to unlock much of the America First agenda that so many Americans demanded in November,” said Harris. He emphasized that the bill would prevent a significant tax increase for families in North Carolina and potentially return $1700 to their pockets. The legislation is designed to strengthen the economy through permanent and enhanced tax policies encouraging businesses to expand and innovate.
The bill includes provisions for farmers, offering investments in safety net programs intended to support American agriculture long-term. It also allocates $175 billion for border security, funding completion of the border wall and enhancing ICE deportation efforts, as well as hiring additional border patrol agents.
Harris highlighted other elements of the package: “Common sense will prevail in many other instances throughout this package.” These include defunding Planned Parenthood and eliminating certain taxes on firearms. However, he noted disappointment over the removal of a prohibition on taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries by the Senate.
Despite acknowledging imperfections in the bill, Harris praised his fellow conservatives for negotiating substantial cost-saving measures. Key features include removing illegal aliens from welfare programs and implementing work requirements for able-bodied adults receiving benefits. He expressed concern about weakened fiscal reforms by the Senate but recognized efforts made towards reducing national debt.
“I recognize to undo the damage done to our country by radical progressive Democrats, Congress must authorize the funds to accomplish that goal,” stated Harris. He warned against continued overspending in Washington, urging Republicans to take further action against it.
