On Wednesday, Representative Mark Harris of North Carolina’s 8th district expressed his views in an op-ed published by The Daily Caller. He urged GOP lawmakers to align their actions with their rhetoric regarding the DOGE initiative and to promptly pass the White House rescissions package.
Harris highlighted the ongoing criticism from Congress members concerning certain USAID projects, NPR’s reporting, and other fiscal issues associated with Washington, D.C. “For months, Members of Congress have been railing against the absurdity of USAID pet projects, the years of biased reporting of NPR, and other decades-long fiscal failures of the DC Swamp,” he stated. He noted that social media has been filled with DOGE memes and images featuring Elon Musk as a sign of support for change.
He emphasized that it is time for Republicans to fulfill their promises: “But talk is cheap. Now’s the time to make good on our promises.” Harris argued that this moment provides an opportunity for Republicans to prove their commitment to fiscal responsibility and limited government. “This is a defining moment for Republicans to demonstrate that fiscal responsibility and limited government are not just talking points. They are the foundation of our conservative movement,” he added.
Harris warned that failing to secure savings would be a burden on Congress: “Failure to secure these savings now rests squarely on Congress’ shoulders. President Trump and DOGE have laid the groundwork, and the American people expect results.”
He concluded by stating that passing this package is only the beginning: “And this is just the beginning. After this vote, we must work with the White House to pass the next rescissions package, and then keep going until our deficit is under control.”
