Union County is one of 77 counties in North Carolina that saw its unemployment numbers increase to approximately 10% of its workforce, the state Department of Commerce said.
The department's report was its first look at unemployment as stay-at-home orders were put into place to slow the spread of COVID-19, WSOCTV reported on June 3.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce noted that out of 100 counties in North Carolina, 71 had unemployment rates that were less than 5% in March, WSOCTV reported. But that changed the following month as none of the states had numbers that low in April. It was also pointed out that while one county had unemployment that peaked 10% in March, 77 of them did in April.
While the county-by-county unemployment numbers climbed in April, non of those regions are higher than the national unemployment average of 14.7%, WSOCTV reported.
