South Piedmont Community College is providing training courses through the new Heavy Equipment Operator Academy in a partnership with the heavy equipment dealer The Ironpeddlers.
The new academy started in July.
“There is a big need in the community for trained workers,” Maria Lander, dean of the Community College's school of applied science and technology, said in a news release about the partnership.
Students at The Academy can obtain nationally-recognized Heavy Equipment Operations Level I, II, and III certifications from the National Center for Construction Education & Research, according to the community college's release.
The program will offer a mix of hands-on and on-location education and training at the college's Tyson Family Center for Technology or The Ironpeddlers venue in Monroe.
Courses will provide hands-on lab time operating mini-excavators and similar equipment and will be held at the college's Tyson Family Center for Technology and on-site at the Monroe location of The Ironpeddlers.
Ideally, within two months will students can gain skills that they can utilize to launch a career earning $20-25 an hour. The courses are focused on getting students into the workforce fast to meet the community’s need for qualified workers.
