State Sen. Tom McInnis (R-Anson) touted North Carolina's recent top regional school ranking by the National Education Association.
"It's interesting that my opponent would say that I 'defunded' education when the National Education Association recently ranked North Carolina #1 in the Southeast," McInnis said in a September Facebook post. "The truth is, our teachers would have gotten another nice raise this year had Governor Cooper not vetoed the budget! Check out the facts!"
North Carolina is ranked 30th in the nation in teacher pay, the Greensboro News & Record reported. In 2013, the state ranked 47th.
A budget fight last year between Gov. Roy Cooper and the Republican-led Legislature left teachers without raises, the News & Record reported.
McInnis faces Democrat Helen Probst Mills in the Nov. 3 contest for the District 25 State Senate seat. Mills serves on the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees, according to her campaign biography.
