Union County issued the following announcement on Aug. 3.
Union County Volunteer Services Coordinator Gloria Haney is being honored for going above and beyond to help a 12-year old girl in foster care who is quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. The child’s caregivers did not have a vehicle suitable to transport the young girl and to rely on Medicaid transportation to get the little girl to numerous medical appointments.
Upon hearing of the need, Haney, who works in a separate department from Social Services, reached out to community contacts. Haney not only found the family an accessible van, but also secured donations from a generous individual to get the van adjusted to suit the needs of the family.
The child’s social worker, Elizabeth Laws, said, “I am so grateful for [Gloria Haney]. She has gone above and beyond for my kiddo and I just do not have words for the joy and freedom this will allow my kiddo and her caregivers.”
For her efforts, Haney was awarded Union County Government's Summer 2021 Caught in the Act Award. Caught in the Act is a recognition program for Union County employees. This program allows an opportunity to recognize and thank employees for going above and beyond expected roles within their job description. As a recipient of the Caught in the Act Award, she will receive a $250 bonus in her next paycheck and is eligible for the annual Caught in the Act Employee of the Year Award.
Haney regularly oversees numerous volunteer programs for Union County including the Christmas Bureau, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, Senior Nutrition (also known as Meals on Wheels), and more. She also leads donation collections throughout the year to collect items for children in foster care, including school supplies, items for Easter baskets, Christmas stocking stuffers, and more.
Social Work Program Manager Alisa Etters said, “Gloria does so much for us and the difference she has made in this little girl’s life is beyond measure. We should be thankful for the community partnerships Gloria has made through the years.”
County leadership surprised Haney and presented her with the Caught in the Act Award on August 2. During the presentation, Deputy County Manager Michelle Lancaster said, “We recognize you for the work that you do and helping make things happen for people in this community.”
Union County Government employees nominate coworkers when they catch them going above and beyond. Recipients of the recognition program are selected four times a year.
