St. Andrews University issued the following announcement on Sept. 1.
Three first-half goals proved to be too much for St. Andrews men's soccer team as the Knights (0-1) lost to host West Virginia Tech (1-1) 3-2 on Wednesday night.
All of the scoring for the Golden Bears came in the opening 25 minutes. West Virginia Tech struck early when Junior Forward Dixie Davies found the back of the net in the ninth minute. An "own goal" in the 21st minute, followed by a goal by Ruben Martin Macias increased the lead to 3-0 in favor of the Golden Bears.
Midfielder Tobias Crosarial answered with a goal for the Knights in the 26th minute, finishing off a pass from Bliss Obodumu. St. Andrews would close out the first half with three shots on frame as the Knights went into the intermission break down 3-1.
Minutes into the second half of play, a red card was given to a Golden Bears midfielder who gave St. Andrews a chance to cut into the West Virginia Tech lead. Obodumu would go on to net his first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute.
St. Andrews continued to be the aggressor for the remainder of the game but could not overcome the Golden Bear lead.
Goalkeeper Alessandro Benedetti (SR/Ascoli, Piceno) finished with six saves in the box.
St. Andrews finished with five shots compared to West Virginia Tech's 12. The match proved to be a contest between two physical teams, as the Golden Bears committed 12 fouls to the Knights' seven.
