Union County issued the following announcement on Sept. 8.
Union County Government and the City of Monroe will proudly share a virtual Patriot Day Ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 3:00 p.m. on the Union County YouTube Channel. The ceremony will commemorate 20 years since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Multiple Union County public safety agencies and first responders will host the ceremony, led by the Monroe Fire Department.
The keynote speaker is Carmen Hill, a Union County native and Army veteran who was serving in the U.S. Army when the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 occurred. Hill graduated from Piedmont High School before attending Appalachian State University. She currently works as a pastry chef at the White House, where she has worked for the last eight years under three different administrations.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year's Patriot Day ceremony will be shared via video on the Union County YouTube Channel for community members to join virtually.
