Wingate University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.
The Wingate University men's cross country team is ranked no. 13 in the week one NCAA Division II national rankings, compiled by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Bulldog women are moving up as well, as they occupy the no. 17 spot.
In the ultra-competitive Southeast Region, the Wingate men are third behind Queens and Augusta. The Bulldog women are second, trailing only the Royals from Queens. Most recently, the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad runners won both team titles in the 11th annual Bulldog Stampede Saturday.
What They Are Saying
Wingate head cross country coach Pol Domenech
"We're happy to have both teams ranked in the top 20 another week. We had a solid start at the Bulldog Stampede with the teams executing the race plan perfectly. We are heading into the regional preview this weekend with a similar plan…working on staying together as a group and getting a solid effort."
"It's early in the season and the team is in the middle of a difficult training block. Our first target this year will be the pre-nationals race on Oct. 2, when we will finally race a full team."
Last week
The Wingate men had five student-athletes finish in the top eight to take the Bulldog Stampede team title for the second time in the last three Stampede events. South Atlantic Conference Runner of the Week Bastian Mrochen won the individual crown in a photo finish.
The Bulldog women won the Stampede team title for the eighth time in their last eight tries. SAC Runner of the Week Lara Orrock finished second to lead the hosts. Five WU student-athletes found spots in the top 10 individually.
