St. Andrews University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.
Jesus Sonora scored his first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) goal of the season Wednesday night as the St. Andrews men's soccer team defeated Montreat (2-2-0, 1-1-0 AAC), 1-0 in a conference match in Black Mountain.
St. Andrews (3-1-1, 2-0-0 AAC) posted its second straight 1-0 victory behind Sonora's goal, which came in the 51st minute on a through ball that was later crossed into the box for the tally. Thiago Mendes (SO/Curitiba, Brazil) and Marcos De La Hoz earned assists on the Knights loan goal.
Senior goalkeeper Alessandro Benedetti (SR/Ascoli, Piceno) and the Knights defense earn their third clean sheet of the season.
Despite the loss, Montreat outshot St. Andrews 15-11 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
St. Andrews men's soccer will remain on the road for a Saturday, Sept. 18 matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan. The match between the Knights and Bulldogs is set to start at 2:00 pm.
