WASHINGTON – Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-08) took a stand against the re-authorization of an expanded Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) after a crucial amendment failed in an unprecedented vote. The Biggs-Jayapal amendment, which aimed to require a warrant for queries of US persons, was not passed in a tight 212-212 vote.

In response to the outcome, Congressman Dan Bishop released a statement emphasizing the importance of protecting Americans' privacy rights. He stated, “Americans have a fundamental right to be free from being spied upon by their government, and warrantless searches under FISA violate that in every way."

Bishop also criticized the bipartisan support for the re-authorization, highlighting that a significant number of lawmakers from both parties sided with the Biden administration on the issue. He remarked, "Today, 86 Republicans and 126 Democrats sided with the Biden administration to bless the Deep State spying on you without a warrant."

Expressing concerns over the potential misuse of surveillance powers, Bishop pointed out past abuses of FISA and stressed the need for increased vigilance. He stated, "We’ve seen rampant abuse of FISA from a weaponized federal bureaucracy, and the American people have had enough. Unfortunately, the uniparty Deep State betrayed them once again."

In conclusion, Congressman Bishop called for more individuals dedicated to upholding civil liberties to join the efforts in Washington. He emphasized, "More freedom fighters needed in Washington."
