FOIA Request Sent to Richmond County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Richmond County Election Department in North Carolina on October 29, 2024. The request, made by Union News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought detailed information about the methods used by the department for counting votes.

Specifically, Union News requested an outline of whether the votes are counted manually or through other means. If manual counting is employed, they asked for an estimated number of people who would be working on election night.

Union News stressed that as a member of the media, access to public records is essential for them to fulfill their professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given their role in disseminating information, they believe they are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.

The request was made under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1., and Union News expressed preference for receiving the requested records in electronic format.

As of now, there has been no response from the Richmond County Election Department regarding this FOIA request.
