HAMLET — A local manufacturer is doubling their existing footprint, adding investment & jobs to Richmond County.
Local officials announced Wednesday that Superior Plastics Extrusion Company, known as Impact Plastics, will be investing a total of $13 million over the next five years, with an initial investment of $5.3 million and newly added positions. This current project will add an additional 50,000 sq. ft. facility to their County Home Rd. location.
“This announcement firmly places Richmond County as a state leader in economic development. We’ve shown that seeing existing industry as family and potential industry as friends breeds motivation and growth. This is a huge win for everyone.” -Commissioner Tavares Bostic.
“This news is the latest example of a manufacturer finding success in Richmond County and growing their footprint in our community. Impact has been a great corporate partner & continues to be one of our highest paying employers, with an average wage exceeding $75,000 per year.”-Chairman Jeff Smart.
Impact Plastics is a family owned and operated custom sheet extruder with plants in Putnam, Connecticut, Hamlet, and Rockingham. Over the past few years Impact has been working with Economic Developer Martie Butler & County Manager Bryan Land to grow their existing footprint within the county and take advantage business opportunities. Throughout this partnership, Impact has gone from 54k sq ft to nearly 150k sq ft of space in the span of just a few years. The expanded facility will house a new line of medical grade plastic extrusion equipment.
“Our Richmond County facility is the focal point for expansion. In 2019, we brought in a muti-layer co-extrusion line to support food and medical products requiring oxygen and moisture protection for the contents of the various products. The line is now operational. In 2021 we brought in a state-of-the-art PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) co-extrusion line capable of running medical and food-grade materials from recycled plastics. Once our current building expansion is complete, we will add additional equipment staff,” Loren Temple, Operations Manager, said in a statement.
Mr. Temple added, “I joined Impact Plastics in 2019 just as our efforts began. Our relationship with Richmond County and North Carolina has facilitated our growth plans, often providing insight and assistance. We consider the relationship a team effort in assisting the area with economic growth.”
