Over the last 20 years, the politics of North Carolina have shifted, wrote the chairman for the John Locke Foundation, John Hood, for the Anson Record

Despite the decreasing number of Republican leaders in the state, Hood said, many of the wins for the GOP in relatively rural areas demonstrates simply a shift in political force.

Hood said many aspects that encourage political dynamics happen outside of the political sphere and take place in everyday life. From universities to housing complexes, the political conversation is driven by everyday issues, he said. The nature of this means that while political power shifts, so do the grounds for political belief.

Hood also emphasized the importance in differences in belief and personal values and the effect both have on political positions. With so many factors at play in the political landscape and each one changing so often, pinpointing the final destination of North Carolina – and even American politics – would be a difficult feat.

"The future of politics in North Carolina and elsewhere is not yet written," Hood said in his column for the Anson Record. "Issues change. Coalitions do, too. Predicting with confidence what those coalitions will look like, and how long they may stay in power, is a fool’s errand."
