CME: Enhance Recovery After Surgery Pathways: Design, Implementation and Sustainability

Firsthealth of the Carolinas recently issued the following announcement.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the steps necessary to set goals and determine desired outcomes for the development of an ERAS pathway.
  • Identify strategies to improve compliance and outcomes with an ERAS pathway.
Target Audience: Providers and staff who care for surgical patients.

Gap to be Filled: Knowledge of “enhanced recovery after surgery” protocols to optimize patient outcomes to achieve early recovery after surgical procedures by maintaining preoperative organ function and reducing the profound stress response following surgery.

Goal of this Live Activity: Provide strategies for the development of and implementation of ERAS pathways.

Speaker

Robert Isaak, DO, FASA

Dr. Isaak is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in the Division of Liver Transplant with the University of NC at Chapel Hill. Clinically, his interests include care for patients undergoing liver transplant surgery, major vascular surgery, major oncological surgeries, and regional anesthesia in the ambulatory surgical setting. His research focuses mainly on topics related to graduate medical education, both for formative and summative assessment.

Dr. Isaak has been a recipient of multiple awards for teaching from the UNC Department of Anesthesiology including the Faculty Teaching Award, Faculty Honor Roll, and Special Recognition Award for Innovation in Simulation Education. Additionally, he previously received the UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators Innovation in Education Award and the UNC Provost’s Office IBM Faculty Development Award.

Lastly, his research has garnered awards at the national level including 1st place prizes for research abstracts at the Society for Education in Anesthesiology Annual Meeting and the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare.

Dr. Isaak earned his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University and doctorate degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
